Our curriculum is carefully selected and revised to accomplish our Expected School-wide Learning Results. We seek to meet or exceed the California state standards in all grades and subjects.†
The Word of God is our guide for Christian living. Bible study and memorization are an integral part of our curriculum. Bible is taught as an academic subject in all grades and is given equal value in computing grade point averages. The curriculum is designed to teach students Biblical truths and how to apply them in their daily life. Biblical perspectives are integrated in all subject areas. When secular textbooks are used, teachers lead students to evaluate them and hold them up to the light of Godís Word.
The elementary math curriculum offers a challenging program for most students while making provisions for both the advanced and the struggling student. It offers frequent review of learned concepts to maintain proficiency.
The middle school math curriculum helps ensure student success with a technology-supported curriculum. Key features include on-going assessment, cumulative review, test preparation, a consistent emphasis on mathematics literacy, and real-world problem solving. An advanced track is offered beginning in 6th grade culminating with Geometry in the 8th grade.
Our Reading and Language Arts program provides an integrated approach to the subject area.† It includes a sequential writing program that emphasizes the writing process and oral language, and incorporates grammar into the writing process. It also includes Spelling as part of the reading/writing process.† The Total Reading Program is used in the lower grades to supplement the textbook. It is a comprehensive, strongly phonics-based approach to reading and is designed to be used alone or with a regular reading series.† Novel studies tied to their social studies units are often used in the higher grades to supplement the textbook.
All students are involved in the Accelerated Reading Program. This program challenges the students to read books for leisure and gradually increase their reading level and comprehension.
Our curriculum provides a hands-on approach to science and stresses the critical thinking skills that are important to learning. Supplemental materials with units on creation and the Christian perspective on science are integrated into lessons. Teachers have many creative ideas for teaching science in an experiential manner.
The entire school also studies various habitats of the ocean each spring in conjunction with Lawrence Hall of Science's MARE program.
The social studies program emphasizes critical thinking skills and a multicultural outlook. It also has a strong geography component. Technology integration provides a complete picture for our program.
The technology curriculum trains students to succeed in the competitive work world they will face as adults.† Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher) and Internet applications, including e-mail for grades 3 through 8, form the basis for a curriculum in which students grow as responsible and capable users of technology.
Physical Education is an important part of our curriculum. We provide a carefully planned program emphasizing the development of the whole child in the psychomotor, intellectual and decisional dimensions.
Choral music is offered to students in grades 1 through 8 and instrumental music instruction is offered to students in grades 4 through 8 at an additional fee. Students in grade 3 are introduced to instrumental music with a 10 week recorder unit taught by the music teachers.† A variety of musical programs are produced throughout the school year.
