Summer is here!
Our 3’s and 4’s have enjoyed learning about New York —the children are learning where the state is located, what the state flag looks like, what the state flower is, and so many more interesting facts. This is a great opportunity for our children to learn about geography, gain language development and comprehension skills, and learn more about our great country. Ask your children about what they are learning—it will be a joy to find out what they think!
As our children paint–they are learning : how colors mix, how texture affects the painting, and how to be creative. These steps are helping the children learn more about colors, shapes, and fine motor skills—all of these will help with future pre-reading and pre-writing skills.
How do we apply knowledge? In one of our 3 year old classes this week, the theme was park/picnic. They had a picnic outside in the morning during snack time—so much fun! Afterwards, the class went inside and read a book about camping, then they reflected and talked about the elements of camping. Using that knowledge—the children drew pictures of their “perfect” picnic.
Art and sensory play are great independent and collaborative activities. Our children develop language and communication skills as they design playgrounds! We have so many future designers and engineers!

If your child has a fever, they must be fever free with no medication for 24 hours prior to their return. Please keep your child home if they are exhibiting covid or flu symptoms. Please test your child if they are experiencing covid symptoms, and report the results to the preschool office. We want to keep all of us healthy.
HOLD your child’s hand as you walk to and from your car. Our children do not understand the dangers of the parking lot. Please encourage them to look both ways before crossing. This begins early learning on car safety. All of our children are the most important people here! Thank you to those of you who are already practicing this and teaching your children important safety routines.
SLOW DOWN in our parking lot. The children are not aware of the danger of a speeding car. Please take good care of everyone’s child by slowing down.

A Note from our Birchwood Principal
Dear MCS Families,
I’m praying that you are having a restful and relaxing summer!
Summer Activities at Birchwood
Summer makes me think of beach days and ice cream! Right now the Birchwood campus is abuzz with summer camp students designing machines in the TinkerLab and being community contributors by working on garden service projects.
Summer Learning Fun
Did you know that parents can be teachers too? STEAM Learning can take place anytime! My kids and I have been exploring biology at Monterey Bay Aquarium, history at Mission Carmel, and we even went whale watching and saw lots of dolphins and whales! Take some time to explore and have an adventure at the many scenic locations in our Bay Area backyard:
-
Go on a nature hike at a local park – observe and take notes on God’s creations. Amazing!
-
Visit a local museum or mission and have your child ask questions of the docents. Build curiosity!
-
Choose a country to research and check out books from your library – you can even make a recipe from that country’s national dish! Yum!
-
Amusement parks are educational experiences, too. Talk about the physics of the roller coaster. Whee!
-
Have a pop-up popsicle party with your friends and neighbors to share the love of Jesus and beat the heat! Phew!
I had a blast touring the preschool campus with Mrs. Sheila Tanimura, Director of the MCS Preschool, seeing our fantastic staff and students learn and play and having the children show me how they write their letters!
I’m working on all the nuts and bolts for schedules, professional development for our teachers and our upcoming parent seminars and I can’t wait to see you all back on campus in August. As I prayer-walked the campus at lunch today I was so grateful for God’s peace and provision for MCS and to be able to serve you as principal in the coming school year!
Best regards,
Megan Jalali
